Edible almond oil

Edible Almond Oil Details.

Almond oil – a rich source of macronutrients and micronutrients – is obtained from the fruits of the deciduous almond tree. Although almonds are highly popular and consumed commonly, the edible almond oil is less popular. This oil can also be used to maintain the health of hair and skin. Almond oils made for consumption are also called sweet almond oils.

Almond oils contain three different types of fats. Most of the fat is monounsaturated fat, which go a long way in increasing the HDL (High-density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol which makes it a welcome addition to any diet. According to recent studies, replacing carbs with monounsaturated fats can bring down blood pressure, improve lipid levels, and also reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Monounsaturated fats in almond oil can also help maintain the sugar levels for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

It contains small amount of saturated fat, which makes the oil heart healthy. Saturated fats have been known to increase the levels of bad cholesterol in the body and contribute to heart diseases. The polyunsaturated fatty acids in the almond oil help bring down the bad cholesterol and also impacts cardiovascular health positively.

The edible almond is devoid of carbohydrates. It is a rich source of vitamin E, which plays an important role in cell metabolism and comes with anti-aging benefits. This beneficial vitamin can also safeguard against certain diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and cataracts. The edible almond oil also comes with a small amount of vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting functions.

Almond oil is made in two ways: chemical extraction or expeller pressed. Highest yield is obtained in chemical extraction however at the expense of taste, quality, and nutrients. Higher quality oil is produced though expeller pressed methods, where the almonds are roasted first in cast-iron kettles, fed through an expeller to make a warm paste, and then pressed to extract the oil. Some almond oils undergo further processing to make them refined where the oil has a higher smoke point as compared to unrefined oils and also maintains nutrient content.
